Entering The New Year 2000 And The New Millennium For All Orthodox Christians
by Father Demetrios Serfes

We as Orthodox Christians know well that to enter into the New Year 2000, and the Millennium, we must be always on the guard and watchful spiritually. All of us as well know that these times have become greatly sorrowful, and these days are full of temptations.
Nothing piously is so important for each of us to remain ever so faithful to our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ, also to His Church, to the Holy Orthodox Christian Faith, and to earnestly treasure it, as the children of the Church, a great pearl we lovingly possess.
We become spiritually rich especially all her faithful loving children: as the teachings of our Faith, our wonderful, salvific Orthodox Faith; that has been giving to us an abundance of Saints and Holy Martyrs, as each one lived according to the Faith. These Holy Saints and Holy Martyrs attained a great spiritual purity and exalted state in which each one was sanctified in Christ our Lord and true God.
Now the earnest and honest question is this for each of us: what kind of life are we going to live in the days ahead of us now that we will enter the new year of 2000, and move onward towards the third century on this earth? Will we acquire the same faith, the same love, and the same joy, as did the Holy Saints and Holy Martyrs of our loving Holy Orthodox Church and Faith? How shall we deal with all the temptations surrounding us when the media tells us "it is finished"? It's not finished my beloved friends in Christ our Lord, not finished yet! Our Lord God has allowed us to move forward, and to work on our salvation and struggle as did the Holy Saints and Holy Martyrs of our Orthodox Christian Faith. We still have time and we should use the forth coming days and forth coming years in prayer, and fully participate in it when the Church calls us to pray. Attend services at your local Orthodox parish, participate in the spiritual beauty and magnificence of our Orthodox divine services. Think about going to a Orthodox Monastery and to pray. Consider also perhaps going to the Holy Land and to pray.
Prepare humbly in prayer to also participate in both Holy Confession and in Holy Communion frequently, and draw near to the Holy Chalice with love and the fear of our Lord God, who loves us all and forgives us poor sinners! At the same time take this pious mystical prayer home with you, and have not only prayer on your lips and in your hearts, but as well faith! With prayer and with faith we shall then endure. Love and pray for your children, and your neighbor, as well as forgive all, and judge no one! Let Christian love be your joy in Christ our Lord for all!
What really spiritually brings us all to the heights of the presence of our Lord God within us, is our true Christian love, without a doubt, as it further brings pious unity of the children of the Church, in which our Saviour Jesus Christ said: "By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if you have love one to another" (St. John 13:35). Let us love one another that with one mind, and one heart we confess: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
It is my God loving pastoral prayer that Christ our True God will watch over you and preserve you, as you struggle on your path towards your salvation in the year 2000, and the years to come. God shall preserve His faithful and watch over you when you struggle onward, and pick up your Cross again and again!
Our Lord God shall never, never abandon His faithful loving children, never! Walk always on the spiritual path of righteousness, and pray that our Gracious Loving God shall indeed continue to watch over us all with His love, His joy, and His mercy!
For unto Thee are indeed the true joy and gladness of those who love Thee, O Christ our God, and to Thee we send up glory, with Thine Unoriginate +Father, and Thy most-holy and good and life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
A Blessed spiritually rewarding New Year to you, and may our Lord God,
grant you: Many Years!
